Lake of the Woods Fishing Information |
|
Lake of the Woods is located in northern Minnesota along the border with Ontario, Canada and is regarded by many experienced anglers as one of the best fishing lakes on earth. Each year anglers travel from all over the nation and Minnesota to experience trophy fishing for Walleye, Muskie, Northern Pike, and Sturgeon. Early in the season, post-spawn Walleye leave the Rainy River and can be found along the flats in shallower waters. Post-spawn Northern Pike can also be captured throughout Lake of the Woods at this time in the shallow bays. By early June, you can find famished Northern Pike along the weedlines trolling crank baits and spinner baits. August and July are generally the greatest times as both the weather and fishing conditions are the best. It's not unusual to catch many fish over 20 inches and mid-lake mud flats and deeper reefs are the location to fish for summer Walleye. The Muskies in Lake of the Woods grow to sizes that are ENORMOUS and you will often find them well over 50 inches. Early in the season you can find Muskie in the shallows around emergent weed beds and as the water warms they'll hang around submergent vegetation and rocky reefs. Fall is commonly the greatest time for trophy Muskie fishing on Lake of the Woods as they like to feed before winter arrives and are very hungry.
